The Ethiopian Electric Utility has provided electricity access to 138,736 new customers in the first quarter (July to September 2026). Engineer Getu Geremew, Chief Executive Officer of the Ethiopian Electric Utility, stated that the performance recorded in the quarter showed 29.4 percent growth compared to the same period last year.

The accomplishment demonstrates the success of the Utility's ongoing efforts to expand electric service to citizens, he said, adding that among the new beneficiaries, 123,509 are prepaid service users, while 15,227 are postpaid service users.

According to the CEO, a total of 30 towns and villages have gained access to electricity — 21 from the main grid and 9 from off-grid options. This represents 15.4 percent growth compared to the same period last year.

To ensure reliable power supply for existing customers, 630 km of distribution network rehabilitation and 275 transformer upgrades were carried out, he mentioned.

He also explained that 1,730 kilometers of distribution network expansion and the installation of 1,329 new distribution transformers were executed to supply electric power to new customers as well as rural towns and villages.

The CEO noted that the growth in customer numbers registered in the quarter indicates the Utility's effort to achieve better performance in line with its plan to realize electricity accessibility. Continuing to increase customer numbers to achieve the annual plan therefore remains the Utility's primary focus.

In addition to providing efficient service and ensuring a reliable power supply, the Utility has been working to prevent malpractices and enforce accountability. In this regard, of the 96 tips and complaints received through digital and other channels, 85 were verified, while 11 are currently under investigation.

Following the investigation, administrative actions were taken against 29 of the 42 employees found guilty. The measures included 4 written warnings, 19 salary fines, and 1 dismissal, while 5 employees were identified as innocent and the remaining cases are still in progress.

Currently, EEU's total number of customers has reached 6.03 million, and customers paying their monthly bills through digital payment systems have risen to 95.3 percent.

#EthiopianElectricUtility
